Africa’s #startup #ecosystem is bigger than fintech. But #fintech is still winning the funding race.

I came across an infographic showing some of #Africa’s top-funded #startups as of #August 2026, and one thing immediately stood out to me.

Fintech dominates.

Moniepoint — $110M
Jumia — $90M
TymeBank — $70M
mPharma — $58M
FairMoney — $42M
Sun King — $38M
Chipper Cash — $30M

And the list continues across e-commerce, logistics, healthtech, energy, software and other sectors.

But there is a bigger story here.
#Africa isn’t simply building more startups.
Africa is building #businesses around real #problems.

How people save.
How people access financial services.
How people connect and network.
How businesses receive payments.
How medicine reaches patients.
How electricity reaches households.
How goods move across cities.
How people buy and sell.

That is where I think the next generation of #African companies will come from.

And as someone building in #community finance, this is particularly interesting to me.

For decades, Africans have already created informal systems to solve financial problems Ajo, Esusu, cooperatives, savings groups and rotating contributions.

The opportunity isn’t to replace those #behaviours.

It is to #modernize them.

That is part of the thinking behind what we build, the #Azatell.

The question I keep asking is:

What happens when #African financial behaviour meets world-class #technology?

This funding landscape suggests #investors are already paying attention to the opportunity.

Now the question is:

Which African startup will become the next $100M company?

What sector do you think will produce it?

TOP 10 AFRICAN FINTECHS IN 2026 🌍💳

Africa’s fintech story is no longer about simply putting banking on a phone.

It is about solving uniquely African problems access, trust, payments, cross-border transactions, cash dependency, and the ability to save and grow money.

Here are 10 fintechs shaping that story:

  1. Flutterwave 🇳🇬 — Building payment infrastructure connecting African businesses to the world.

  2. OPay 🇳🇬 — Making everyday digital payments more accessible.

  3. M-Pesa 🇰🇪 — Proved that a mobile phone can become a financial account.

  4. Moniepoint 🇳🇬 — Building financial infrastructure around the needs of businesses and SMEs.

  5. Paystack 🇳🇬 — Making online payments easier for African businesses.

  6. PalmPay 🇳🇬 — Bringing payments and digital financial services closer to everyday consumers.

  7. Wave 🇸🇳 — Showing how simplicity and affordable mobile money can drive adoption.

  8. Chipper Cash 🌍 — Tackling the complexity of moving money across African borders.

  9. Kuda 🇳🇬 — Reimagining everyday banking through a digital-first experience.

  10. Interswitch 🇳🇬 — Building the infrastructure powering digital payments across Africa.

But the bigger lesson isn’t the companies.

It’s the problems they chose to solve.

Africa doesn’t need more technology for technology’s sake.

We need products that understand how Africans earn, spend, save, borrow, send money and build wealth together.

That is where the next generation of African fintech will be built.

And I believe community finance will be a major part of that future.

The opportunity isn’t just to digitize what already exists.

It is to modernize the financial behaviours and communities that have always existed.

Which African fintech do you think deserves to be on this list?

Ghana-based fintech startup Seevcash - Get Paid Anywhere has raised $333,000 through four separate awards from the Stellar Community Fund (SCF) and affiliated ecosystem growth programs.

Serving African diaspora communities across Ghana, the United States, and international corridors, Seevcash - Get Paid Anywhere leverages USDC on the Stellar blockchain network to deliver fast, low-cost peer-to-peer money transfers and remittance flows. Alongside the funding milestone, the company has integrated with MoneyGram and rolled out a physical Seevcash - Get Paid Anywhere Visa card to enable users to spend digital assets globally. The funds will be deployed to optimize its cross-border infrastructure, enhance digital wallet services, and expand financial access for unbanked populations.

Paystack acquired a fintech… and immediately began shutting down its core product.

Sounds counterintuitive, right?
Until you realize what Paystack was actually buying.
Allawee was a Nigerian fintech that pivoted from credit to building backend infrastructure that powered card issuance for heavyweights like PiggyVest, Carbon, and Nomba.
When Paystack acquired Allawee, they didn't keep the consumer or business accounts alive. They shut them down.
Why acquire a startup just to sunset its main product?
Because Paystack wasn't buying the brand, the logo, or the user interface.
They were buying the engine under the hood.
Behind Allawee’s app was critical financial plumbing:
* Card issuance and tokenization
* Real-time transaction authorization engines
* Multi-currency ledgers and spend controls
* Direct integrations into complex banking networks
Paystack faced a classic build-versus-buy decision: spend two years and millions of dollars building card infrastructure from scratch, or acquire the tech and the team that already solved the problem. They chose speed.
There is a powerful lesson here for founders.
Everyone wants to build the visible consumer app—the sleek UI, the flashy marketing campaign, the viral downloads. But often, the highest-value startups are the ones building the "boring" infrastructure underneath:
* Ledger systems
* Identity verification APIs
* Compliance tools
* Logistics routing algorithms
* Security and fraud detection rails
Allawee's brand name will fade, but the code its engineers wrote will now power transactions for millions of users across Africa through Paystack's ecosystem.
Don't just ask if your startup is well-known. Ask if you've built something so difficult, tedious, or complex that a major player would rather buy you than spend years trying to replicate it.
Sometimes your greatest value isn't your brand—it's the years of development time you can save someone else.

Why Africa is Failing to Produce Enough Unicorns

54 countries. 1.6 billion people. 12 unicorns.
Estonia — 1.3 million people and 10 unicorns.

That contrast hits hard. But it also misses the real point: Africa isn't failing to produce unicorns; it’s building for survival on a terrain that makes hyper-growth almost impossible.
People look at Silicon Valley or Tallinn and wonder why the same playbook doesn't yield $1B valuations in #Lagos or #Nairobi. They blame a lack of vision, or a lack of tech talent.
They miss the reality of the ground underneath.

Three structural realities choke #African venture scale before a startup even gets close to "Unicorn" status.
The first is the Fragmented Market Illusion. People see 1.6 billion consumers and calculate massive TAM (Total Addressable Market). But Africa isn't one #market—it's 54 distinct regulatory regimes, 54 currency risks, and dozens of disconnected trade borders. Scaling across Africa isn't like scaling across the US or Europe; it’s like launching in a brand-new country with completely different rules, infrastructure, and consumer behaviors every single time you cross a border.
The second is Infrastructure Drag. In developed markets, tech #startups build software on top of reliable public infrastructure—stable power grids, functional logistics networks, legal protections, and high purchasing power. In Africa, startups end up spending 40% of their venture capital just building the basic foundation. When a #software company has to generate its own power, build its own distribution network, and act as its own trust layer, capital efficiency dies.
The third is The Purchasing Power Gap.

A #startup can have 10 million active users in Africa and still generate a fraction of the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) of a #European startup with 100,000 users. Valuations are tied to cash flow and margin, not just download counts. When the average consumer’s wallet is constrained by inflation and currency devaluations, hitting venture-scale revenues becomes an uphill battle against macroeconomic headwinds.
And yes, our ecosystem is heavily skewed toward #fintech. But that isn't a flaw—it's the necessary first step. You cannot build #e-commerce, mobility, healthtech, or digital logistics until you build the trust and payment rails to move money reliably. Fintech isn't the destination; it's the foundation.

Africa doesn’t produce unicorns at scale not because we lack local insight, but because we are asking founders to build high-speed digital cars while simultaneously laying down the paved roads, power lines, and traffic lights.
The real miracle isn't that Africa only has 12 #unicorns.

The real miracle is that despite the friction, African #entrepreneurs are building resilient, cash-generating businesses that solve real-world problems every single day—unicorn title or not.

Value creation here looks different. And maybe it's time we stop measuring African success with a Western tape measure.

🚨 MTN is no longer just building a mobile money business. It is moving toward becoming a financial institution.

And the numbers explain why.

On 25 August 2026, MTN Group said it is exploring banking licences in selected #African markets as lending becomes an increasingly important part of its fintech strategy.

Look at the scale of the existing ecosystem:

💰 $330 BILLION - Fintech transaction value in H1 2026, up more than ⅓ YoY
👥 70.8 MILLION - Monthly active MoMo users, up 12.1%
🔄 13 BILLION - Fintech transactions in H1 2026, up 17%
🤝 1.4 MILLION - Active MoMo agents, up 13.1%
🏪 2.3 MILLION - Active fintech merchants, up 18.1%

Now MTN is asking a much bigger question:

What happens when a telecom company with 70M+ financial-services users starts moving deeper into lending and banking?

The evolution is becoming clear:

Telco → Mobile Money → Payments → Lending → Banking

And this isn't happening in isolation.

Airtel Money already had 54.1M customers as of March 2026, with mobile-money transaction value exceeding $215B annualised.

Airtel is also reportedly preparing a London listing for Airtel Money at a valuation of around $10B.

So why does this matter?

Because Africa's next fintech battle may not be about who has the biggest wallet.

It could be about who can monetize the financial ecosystem around the wallet.

Payments create transaction data.

Wallets create customer relationships.

KYC creates identity.

Transaction history creates credit intelligence.

And lending creates a completely different revenue opportunity.

The infrastructure connecting all of these layers could become just as important as the consumer-facing app itself.

Africa's fintech market is moving from access → transactions → intelligence → credit → banking.

The interesting question now is:

👉 Will telecom-led fintechs become Africa's next generation of banks?
