Nigeria Anti-Narcotics Agency Intercepts Synthetic #Cannabis From UK, Finds Drugs Hidden In Speakers In Lagos

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (#NDLEA) have intercepted two shipments of synthetic cannabis, popularly known as #Colorado or Colos, concealed in consolidated cargoes from the United Kingdom.

“Colos” is #Nigerian street slang for Colorado, a form of synthetic cannabis.

The agency also recovered two other consignments of #Colorado hidden inside music speakers at two motor parks in Lagos, with at least seven suspects arrested in connection with the seizures.

The #NDLEA disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi.

At the import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (#MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, NDLEA operatives intercepted a UK-bound consignment containing 27 parcels of Colorado weighing 32.20kg.

According to the agency, a real estate agent, Abideen Jide Salami, was arrested on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after he arrived to collect a large luggage containing the illicit substance using a secret collection code reportedly relayed by his brother based in the #UK.

In a follow-up operation linked to another shipment from the UK, NDLEA operatives traced and arrested the designated recipient of a second consignment containing 12.25kg of Colorado.

The suspect, 44-year-old Nurudeen Abiodun Kadiri, reportedly told operatives that the consignment had been sent to him by his brother in the UK.

That contrast hits hard. But it also misses the real point: Africa isn't failing to produce unicorns; it’s building for survival on a terrain that makes hyper-growth almost impossible.
People look at Silicon Valley or Tallinn and wonder why the same playbook doesn't yield $1B valuations in #Lagos or #Nairobi. They blame a lack of vision, or a lack of tech talent.
They miss the reality of the ground underneath.

Three structural realities choke #African venture scale before a startup even gets close to "Unicorn" status.
The first is the Fragmented Market Illusion. People see 1.6 billion consumers and calculate massive TAM (Total Addressable Market). But Africa isn't one #market—it's 54 distinct regulatory regimes, 54 currency risks, and dozens of disconnected trade borders. Scaling across Africa isn't like scaling across the US or Europe; it’s like launching in a brand-new country with completely different rules, infrastructure, and consumer behaviors every single time you cross a border.
The second is Infrastructure Drag. In developed markets, tech #startups build software on top of reliable public infrastructure—stable power grids, functional logistics networks, legal protections, and high purchasing power. In Africa, startups end up spending 40% of their venture capital just building the basic foundation. When a #software company has to generate its own power, build its own distribution network, and act as its own trust layer, capital efficiency dies.
The third is The Purchasing Power Gap.

A #startup can have 10 million active users in Africa and still generate a fraction of the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) of a #European startup with 100,000 users. Valuations are tied to cash flow and margin, not just download counts. When the average consumer’s wallet is constrained by inflation and currency devaluations, hitting venture-scale revenues becomes an uphill battle against macroeconomic headwinds.
And yes, our ecosystem is heavily skewed toward #fintech. But that isn't a flaw—it's the necessary first step. You cannot build #e-commerce, mobility, healthtech, or digital logistics until you build the trust and payment rails to move money reliably. Fintech isn't the destination; it's the foundation.

Africa doesn’t produce unicorns at scale not because we lack local insight, but because we are asking founders to build high-speed digital cars while simultaneously laying down the paved roads, power lines, and traffic lights.
The real miracle isn't that Africa only has 12 #unicorns.

The real miracle is that despite the friction, African #entrepreneurs are building resilient, cash-generating businesses that solve real-world problems every single day—unicorn title or not.

Value creation here looks different. And maybe it's time we stop measuring African success with a Western tape measure.
