I've been pondering on how true this is but it hits close to home, because there's some truth to it.

But let's be fair, not every Nigerian remote worker who stays quiet is being selfish. Some are simply respecting company policy. A lot of organizations are clear that referral links, internal openings, and recruitment processes aren't meant to be shared publicly.

That said, we can't pretend gatekeeping doesn't exist. Some people genuinely struggled to find their opportunity, and somewhere along the line, decided everyone else should struggle too. Others just aren't great at mentoring. They'll show you the salary screenshot or the laptop setup, but never the skills, platforms, or steps that actually got them there.

Here's the thing though: sharing knowledge doesn't shrink your own chances. If anything, it strengthens the community around you. You don't have to hand anyone your job, but pointing them in the right direction doesn't cost you anything.

And if someone chooses to stay quiet because of company policy or personal privacy, that's understandable too.

So I'll ask: is the gatekeeping justified, or should people be more open about remote work opportunities?
